Husky Pomeranian Mix – Pomsky Puppy

January 12, 2014

It’s always exciting to bring home a new family member. Choosing your dog is especially fun. One of the most popular breed these days is the Pomsky, which is a mix of a cute and fuzzy Pomeranian with a sturdy and intelligent Husky. You imagine this cute little dog that will always stay small and be playful with family members, right? You may actually realize your dream, but in some cases the dog will grow to be larger than you expected. In most cases that is not a big deal, but it might be the one thing you really don’t want. It’s important that you understand how they are bred and what you can reasonably expect from your new family friend.

Designer Dogs

Pomskies are referred to as “designer dogs” because breeders can select the parents to gain certain physical and personality traits that are desirable. Some people prefer dogs that stay small so a quality breeder may select huskies that are on the smaller side. Some people may prefer that their Pomsky to have the coloration and fur of huskies but the size of a Pomeranian, so that will be the goal of the breeder. As a potential family member of a Pomsky it is necessary that you take the time to talk to the breeder about their selection and breeding methods to assure that you get what you expect with your purchase. The best thing you can do is contact the Pomeranian club of American to learn about where quality breeders are located so that you make the best choice possible.
Husky Mix Puppy SalesYou should ask the breeder what type of dogs are used for breeding so you can have a better idea what you should expect with your puppy. If a larger husky is one of the parents, you may get a dog that weighs about 25 pounds in adulthood, with a medium build. If that is not what you are expecting, you should let the breeder know. If eye color is important ask for pictures of the parents and the offspring. If they can’t provide that for you, you may want to find a different breeder. You are making a purchase that will live with you for at least 15 years and one that will cost you in the neighborhood of $1500, so you have every right to have your expectation, especially for a designer dog.

How to make sure you buy well

Research Pomskies so you know what type of personality to expect, the dog’s temperament, their fur type, and size. These dogs vary, so if you are looking for something in particular, you can discuss these details with the breeder you decide to work with toward your purchase.
another-2-pomeranian-and-husky-mixDiscuss with your breeder what you expect regarding credentials and paperwork, which they are required to provide to you. If they give you a runaround, you should stop the process and look for another breed you feel you can trust. The paperwork should include vet check for diseases or illnesses, and shots. There should also be DNA testing included to verify the type of dogs used to breed you Pomsky. This also goes to the payment method. A breeder should accept a PayPal payment or bank transfer. If they insist on a money order or cashier’s check, you should walk away. If you are purchasing the animal from afar, you should require an interview over the phone at the very least. It is best, however, to try to make the purchase at a local breeder if at all possible. The main thing you should keep in mind is that your new friend is a lifelong investment you must protect at all cost.

A Introduction of Pomeranian

When you are looking for a introduction of Pomeranian dogs then you may find some good information on them at your local bookstore, pet shop or library.  You can find books on their size, background, what to feed them, etc.  You may even find books that will give you a introduction to Pomeranian breeds in the form of an e-book.  You may also be able to get good information on the breed from your local vet.

Right now you will read about some interesting and little known facts about the breed.

Pomeranian Breed and origins

The Pomeranian is actually a part of the Spitz family.  They originated in the Pomerania area that lies in the heart of Europe.  You will not find this region on current maps though because now it is a part of both Germany and Poland.  The breed was named for the region from which it originated.

Although the breed is classified as a breed known as toy dogs because of its size, if you know anything at all about dogs then you will know that the Spitz dogs that the Pomeranian descends from is a much larger breed.  While they are known here as Pomeranians, in a lot of countries they are called Dwarf Spitz.

So how did they get so small if they are descended from a larger breed?  Keep reading and you will find out shortly.

PopularityPomeranian

When Queen Victoria reigned in England in the 17th century she had a small red dog.  Yes, it was a Pomeranian.  She gained the love of this breed as a child because her grandmother, Queen Catherine had this type of dog.  Queen Catherine’s dog was larger though and weighed in at about 50 pounds.  When it became widely known what the breed of Queen Victoria’s dog was it created a fad.  People wanted to have the same type of dog that the Queen had.  That sparked the popularity of the breed and it has been going strong ever since.  Although the breed was larger back then, the Queen’s dog was a small one for the times.  She was a great fan of dogs in general and helped to finance kennels for breeding the dogs.  When dog aficionados and breeders found that out, they started breeding only small versions of the animal.  The Queen helped them in this endeavor by importing the smallest she could find from different countries.  During her reign alone and directly due to both her influence and preferences, the size of a Pomeranian shrunk by more than 50%.

Things to watch for

Although this breed of dog is small it is a rather hearty breed.  The most common natural afflictions to watch out for in this breed are tracheal collapse, luxating patella and black skin disease.  Other than that if you give the dog his shots and make sure he gets everything that he needs he should be pretty healthy as a whole.  Their life expectancy is about 16 years.

Tracheal collapse occurs when the dog’s trachea collapse.  If you notice the critter having trouble breathing or actually passing out this may be the reason and the dog should receive medical treatment.

Luxating patella is basically when the dog’s knee cap slips out of place.  The dog will not be able to sit comfortably and the leg will be in a position where it is bent with the paw off the ground.  Painful when it occurs, the condition is not painful immediately after the kneecap slips.

Black skin disease is when the skin turns black and the hair falls out.

AppearancePomeranian puppies

The Pomeranian is a small breed.  At the maximum growth they only reach a height of 11’’ and their weight generally gets to be between 7 and 8 pounds.    Their coat is generally fluffy and their tails are set both high as well as flat.  While earlier versions of this breed were primarily pure white or sometimes black, now they are the breed that has the largest array of colors out of every breed in the world.

Grooming

It is recommended that this breed is brushed out every single day.   That is because the dog actually has 2 coats.  The part that you primarily see on first look is the outer coat and is straight, long and not very soft.  There is also an undercoat though.  This undercoat tends to be short, very dense and soft.  Because the dog constantly sheds, if they are not brushed out on a daily basis they can become matted and tangled and this could actually lead to health conditions.

Attitude

For a little dog the Pomeranian can have a big attitude.  They are extremely temperamental because the owners tend to spoil them.  In order to teach good behavior early Pomeranian puppies should be trained at as early an age as possible.  Without early training the Pomeranian puppies will grow up to be little barkers.  They have a tendency to bark as the slightest provocation unless trained early not to.

A Random Interesting Fact or Four

When the Titanic sank there were only 3 dogs saved.  One of them was a Pekinese and the other two were both Pomeranians; which raises the question of why they were saving dogs while people were drowning?

In 1898 the first of the Pomeranian breed became registered at the American Kennel Club although it was not even recognized by the club as a breed for two more years.

Speaking of clubs, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show awarded the breed a prize for the first time in 1926. This prize was in the Toy Group category.   A pom would not win another prize there until 62 years later when one was awarded the prize for Best in Show.

For each of the last 10 years, the breed has been on the top 10 list for the most popular breed in America according to the American Kennel Club.  The breed is extremely more popular in America than anywhere else on the world at the time of this writing.

Owning a pet means dealing with pet hair all over your house and it can trigger an allergic reaction in some people with allergies. 2.  Choose a vacuum with a 99.9% dirt and debris removal guarantee and a feature with surround suction. These two features will result in better cleaning as well as greater maneuverability.
  3.  For quick cleanups, versatility and cleaning furniture and drapes, choose a handheld vacuum. Included attachments are definitely a plus and many handheld vacuums on the market today have them. And remember that there are handheld vacuums specifically for pet hair as well, so look for that feature.
